When The Ordinary is extra-ordinary πŸ§–β€β™€οΈ

Me and skin care anything have a strange relationship. We never really got on to be honest. Its not something I have ever really invested in and routine, routine was non-existent. I found every time I tried, I just used all the wrong products and just clogged up my skin and made it worse.

I don’t have any skin conditions, but I do have combination skin. Some parts oily, some parts dry, some parts don’t know what they want to be. But like any other human, I had the regular skin issues. I was partial to a break out, esp that time of the month, the eating crap only phase, a here’s one spot – kill it and 3 come to its funeral, those mutha f***n sore ones in your eyebrow, have ya had one of them, because just touching off those ones is the equivalent to the foot standing on a plug. They hurt.

Anyway, I had seen a few people raving about this brand – so I went to Google, and all these products popped up.. But here’s the thing, I couldn’t figure out which products I even needed, I didn’t know where to start, so I bought nothing. Fast forward a few months later of me surviving on a Penny’s hydration moisturiser and Micellar Water (I will never part with that) I stumbled upon a window full of The Ordinary products in Brown Thomas Beauty Lounge on Clarendon St.. and in I went.

I explained my non existent skin care regime, said for the 1st time out loud I needed to look at anti-ageing products and that I was also looking for an exfoliator, serum and light moisturiser. The girl was so helpful, talked me through each product, showed me from samples how much product to use of each and given how clueless I was, she wrote the instruction on each box of when to use. I walked out with 4 products, at the bargain price of €33, a smile on my face and a thought in my head was it too good to be true?!

6 weeks later I can tell you it certainly was not and I am now The Ordinary converted, with a skin care regime and some seriously smooth skin!

The great thing about this range is you can tailor make your package to suit your skin type and needs, like most I suppose, but I just find this range a lot more extensive than most in terms of the products they have. It is ridiculously affordable, Vegan friendly, free of paraben, which we learned about in Tanning Thursday is basically to Cosmetics what MSG is to food, and that’s not good.

Now I don’t wear a lab coat so I wont be talking through ingredients every time a different acid is mentioned. Just the important ones.

So here’s what I’m working with

AHA 30% – BHA 2% Peeling Solution

This is my extra strength exfoliator. Its not a peel even though it says it in the title. You just apply with your fingertips and wash off!

This is a really strong exfoliator, as in its extra strength. Its main objectives is to clear dead skin, clogged pores while brightening and clarifying skin. It is quite light in consistency, I’ve learned I don’t need to be packing it on, and its the highly concentrated blends of the 30% Alpha Hydroxy – Glycolic Acids, Lactic Acids – with the Salicylic Acid, that thoroughly exfoliates the skin surface layers and works to clear congested pores.

The Salicylic acid helps with exfoliation, penetrating to the pores clearing blemishes and blackheads.

The pepperberry extract help reduce irritation and the hyaluronic acid counteracts the exfoliation by restoring hydration. The added vitamin B5 also assists and promotes healing of the skin, while the black carrot is a powerful antioxidant.

This is not for the faint hearted faces and this was drilled into me when purchasing. It is a strong mix, it tingles on application, but the results were exactly what I was looking for and combined with the rest of the products I used I was very impressed. It is the right balance for me in taking away the bad in the skin and restoring the good.

  • Continuous use over time ensures your skin texture improves
  • Skin cell renewals are boosted
  • Helps reduce the appearance of fine lines acting the anti ageing.. which god knows hitting 34 this year I need.
  • Ideally you should use this product in the evening, no more than twice weekly. I use it once every 2 weeks.
  • Do not leave it only for any longer than 10 minutes.
  • It is also recommended to use a daily SPF alongside this product.

Second in my collection

Salicylic Acid 2% solution

This is my “Spot Treatment”

This was a recommended to use for my spots/breakouts. When I was getting fed all the info it was recommended I use this sparingly, as in, only on the spots when they were there.. However for certain skin types, this can be used as an exfoliator.

The salicylic acid has anti inflammatory properties so it helps tone down redness, inflammation of acne and used over time can help balance the skin as it regulates sebum production.

My direction of use is purely just to dab onto the spots. However if you are using it as an exfoliator, make sure you are directed as to how to use. When you rub this product in it “foams” becomes “suddy” so you almost get that facewash feeling from it.

If you are using it for exfoliating purposes note that the benefits of this are that it will clear dead skin cells, penetrate into the pores, clear excess oil that can lead to clogging and with continued use can leave the skin looking and feeling clarified.

  • Daily use of SPF with this.
  • Use morning and evening.
  • Dab onto spots/breakouts.

Next in line,

Buffet – Multi Technology Peptide Serum

This is my “Powerful anti ageing” product. As I said I’m still coming to terms with anti-ageing.

Packed with peptide complexes and amino acids, this product combats fine lines, wrinkles, restores skin elasticity for a smoother complexion.

Designed to work like Botox (I only requested anti-ageing) it encourages skin to produce more collagen and elastin, restores firmness and resilience. It stimulates the skin so the forehead and crows feet appear smooth and lifted.

It contains 11 Amino acids – supports skins own repair functions and production of collagen. Hyaluronic acid provides the hydration and probiotics help reduce inflammation and improve sensitive and dry skin.

I only use a drop of this. It has a milk like consistency, I drop a bit into the palm of my hand, and rub it together, this totally opens up and loosens the product and its so spreadable on your face.

*I always let this dry in then apply my moisturiser.*

  • Suitable to all skin types

Last but not least in my collection

Natural Moisturizing Factors + HA

This is an instant hydrator and the hyaluronic offers a protection barrier. It is packed with skin loving ingredients to moisturise and repair immediately with lasting effects.

Natural Moisturising Factors (NMF) are elements that keep the outer layer of the skin protected and well hydrated. NMF are made up of multiple amino acids, fatty acids, triglycerides, urea… and a load of other things the people in the white coats are better off dealing with… along with many other compounds that are naturally present in the skin.

It is a non-greasy formula, again you only need a small amount as the product “opens up” when you rub it in.

Suitable for all skin types.

Apply after serum for surface hydration.

Other products on my list to try out:

Mineral UV Filters SPF 30 & 15

€9.40 for the SPF 30

€8.70 for the SPF 15

These will defo be going into my suitcase when I hit up the sun!
Squalane Cleanser

This is like a Make-Up remover, now I love my Micellar Water so I highly doubt I will be replacing it but I can still give it a try. It is soap free with high levels of hydration.
100% Plant derived Hemi-Squalane

Helps reduce ongoing hydration loss, fast obsorbing, non- greasy dry oil. Can also be used in frizzy hair for frizz control.
Caffine Sollution

This is a lightweight eye serum, reduces puffiness and dark circles round the eyes and is defo top of my list.
The whole Vitamin C Collection

This is made of 2 light oils, 4 types of serum and a powder which you add to a moisturiser or serum for a turbocharge of Vitamin C.

Now for some before and afters:

This is my face, time of the month eating crap.. These products don’t claim to make spots disappear forever and if a product tells you that. Its a bare face lie, pun intended!!!

But this is how bad my skin can get and the after pics are my face today. I exfoliated almost 2 weeks ago so I will be due one end of this week. Look at me with a whole skin regime, I feel so proud.

The pics of today show how the continued use had totally brightened my skin, its so clarified and barely any redness, blemishes etc. There is no filter or editing in any pics. But I am so impressed with my skin.

This is about 2 weeks later, same camera, no filters, some just with and without the flash.

So here I am, an absolute learner to Skincare but getting on grand and its not too time consuming, isnt too much effort, not breaking the bank. Its also worth noting and I don’t know if it makes a difference, but I do as many make up free days as possible (I think that is a definite sign your getting old) and as much as I rave about skincare I also have days where nothing at all goes on my face, not even any of this. Its a routine that suits me and my skin and taken some trial and error but I am defo in a skin happy place.

Worth noting every product is 30ml, so it is ideal for travelling.

If you have any feedback or skin care recommendations dont be afraid to share. We’re all in this together. And Im only learning!

Hope you enjoyed this piece,

Christine x
